Teacher Training
The Wessex Learning Trust is proud to offer two paths to teacher training, through a primary or secondary route.
Primary route
The Trust is a UCAS approved hub for Primary Initial Teacher Trainees. We work with Somerset School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), supporting PGCE students to achieve their ambitions to become teachers.
If you are interested in becoming a primary teacher, and would like more information, please contact us through office@sandfordprimary.org and we can help you start this exciting journey.
Secondary route
The Mid Somerset Consortium for Initial Teacher Training is our provider of secondary school centred initial teacher training (SCITT).
The MSCITT is part of the Wessex Learning Trust and works in conjunction with many other local schools, academies and colleges to train secondary school teachers within its partnership.
Secondary teacher training has become established in Somerset with the consortium and most of its trained teachers take up full-time employment in local schools, thereby ensuring a healthy succession of enthusiastic and competent practitioners working effectively with pupils. The school-based route into teaching has proved to be successful because it is a practical approach in developing the skills needed in a demanding workplace. It is a year of hard but satisfying work!
In addition to Qualified Teacher Status, those trainees who reach the necessary academic standard will be awarded a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE), with Bath Spa University, being the accrediting body. The PGCE comes with 60 credits towards a Masters in Education.
The Mid Somerset Consortium is centrally based in Street and works with most secondary schools in Somerset and North Dorset. Courses are offered in most subjects and they offer fee paying and salaried places (in some subjects) and are experts at working with people with more complex educational backgrounds.
