Raising the Roof with the Sound of Music!

By Sam Kail-Dyke – Wessex Learning Trust

On Monday 20th June, musicians from the Kings of Wessex Academy and Nailsea School came together for the first time to put on an incredible joint concert. The concert, which has been a long time in the making having been postponed by COVID for nearly two years, showcased the amazing musical talents of learners from across both schools and provided a brilliant evening of entertainment for the audience who came along to watch.

The concert featured performances from a multitude of ensembles including Brass Bands, Big Bands, String Ensembles, Choirs, and more; as well as music ranging from Teleman’s Vivace Concerto for Four, to The Champs’ ‘Tequila’ and selections from ‘The Greatest Showman’. There were also a number of incredible joint items (‘Adiemus’ by Karl Jenkins and ‘We Are Young’ by Fun) that saw musicians from both schools come together and really ‘raise the roof’!

The audience were wow-ed by the incredible talent on display throughout the evening and filled the hall with rapturous applause after each performance.

Chief Executive of the Trust, Gavin Ball, said of the concert:

“It was a pleasure to be in the audience for this wonderful celebration of music making, and to hear so many incredible performances from our learners. Music is such an important part of our curriculum and I am delighted to see it thriving across our schools”.

Gavin Ball, Chief Executive

The concert also marks the first time that learners from both schools have been able to play together and develop their playing through collaboration – something made so much easier by being part of the Trust.

A massive thank you must go out to Sarah Righton (Head of Music at Kings) for her work in organising the performance, as well as to Lynda Perkins (Curriculum Leader of Music at Nailsea) and the whole team of staff and peripatetic teachers from both schools who made this wonderful event possible.

Having been such a success this term, we can’t wait for future Trust concerts, so be sure to watch this space and get your tickets as soon as they are announced!
