Green Fingered Growers at Wedmore!

Reception children from Wedmore First School Academy have been getting their hands dirty (quite literally!) in the garden recently as they took place in Outdoor Classroom Day on the 5th November, sowing wildflower seeds in the school garden. Over the past 6 months the garden has had a complete transformation thanks to volunteers who have tended to it on a weekly basis: pulling out weeds; cutting back thorns; and redesigning the area in the hope that in the spring it will become a feast for the senses and a practical and fun space for the children to learn outdoors.

The wildflower seeds were provided by the company Seedballs who are working with Backyard Nature, a company set up to inspire ‘children to spend more time enjoying and protecting nature where they live’. Hopefully the children will be able to watch the wildflower garden establish and observe the benefit of wild spaces for insects and wildlife.

As rural schools we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by greenery, however you can never have too much, and the addition of the garden facility to Wedmore First School Academy is something which we believe will help support the children and enable them to grow an appreciation and understanding of the natural world. The garden also adds to the already beautiful site at Wedmore and makes it an even more wonderful place for children to come.
