Cheddar First ‘Race Against Hunger’

April 4, 2022

Cheddar First School is encouraging local people to lace up their trainers this spring and join Race Against Hunger in support of anti-poverty charity the Trussell Trust.
Cheddar First’s pupils, aged 2 to 9 years old, will all take up the challenge and, alongside their teachers and parents, they will walk around the school’s field to help raise vital funds to end the need for food banks in the UK.

Acting Head teacher Suzi Smith is hoping to inspire more people across Cheddar and Somerset to relish the challenge and support the charity by also signing up for Race Against Hunger taking place on Saturday 2nd April.

Fundraisers can plan their own route and take on the event at a time that suits them. Alone or with families, friends, colleagues or their school, this is an opportunity for everyone to put their foot down on UK poverty and join the Race Against Hunger.

People joining the event not only will be standing alongside the Trussell Trust to help fight for a more just society where everyone can afford the essentials, but they will also get training guides and support, t-shirt, a back sign and ribbon armband to wear on the day. They will be crossing the finishing line with #TeamTrussell.

Mrs Smith said:

“We know how difficult it can be for our parents when they cannot afford to feed their children and what a difference it makes to our children when they are well fed and happy”
“We are really aware of the issues of poverty and hunger, and we work alongside our local food bank to signpost people and families facing hardship to the food bank, and we also organise food collections. We deeply care about our community, and we cherish the opportunity to do more!

Cheddar First has over 200 pupils of different ages and we are trying to get all of them involved in Race Against Hunger. It’s something different and fun for kids to do whilst supporting a cause that can make the difference for our community.”

Suzi Smith, Acting Headteacher

The Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of more than 1,300 food bank centres – including a food bank in Cheddar – which together provide emergency food and support to help people in crisis.
The charity believes that everyone should be able to afford the essentials in life and have the dignity of buying their own food and is campaigning for change to create a future where no one needs to use a food bank to get by.
By supporting Race Against Hunger, people in Cheddar are helping the charity fight hunger and end the need for food banks in the UK. With their support, the Trussell Trust can create long-term change and build a UK where everyone can afford the essentials.

To celebrate their amazing achievements in the Race Against Hunger, at the end of the week staff and children gathered on the school field to say ‘NO’ to hunger … with the help of a drone! See some amazing photos and videos below!
