At Mark First School this term, students have been becoming familiar
with the traditions of Chinese New Year in cross-curricular celebrations
earlier this term.
In the Kestrel class for instance, the children made a
traditional (and very tasty) Chinese meal of vegetable spring rolls sticky rice
pudding in Design & Technology – using their cutting, peeling and grating
skills. As well as the food, children also learnt about the ancient tradition
of the Wishing Tree and we made own version of this tradition on our school
In the Woodpecker Class, the children learnt all about the
red envelopes that children receive, the tradition of the wishing tree and again,
how to make some tasty Chinese cuisine. To top the celebrations off children
created their own 3D dragon which took centre stage at a new year parade on the
A wonderful time was had by all, and all the children definitely learned a lot about a new culture … we just hope there’s still some leftovers for us!
